Habitat's Earth Day Extravaganza on 4/22

Habitat for Humanity goes green, plans “Earth Day Extravaganza”

Local non-profit celebrates Earth Day on April 22nd to bring awareness to the environment and offer an alternative to dumping unwanted building materials, furniture and appliances into area landfills.

Roaring Fork Valley, CO, April 15, 2008 – From Leonardo DiCaprio pitching the benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs to McDonalds “greening the Golden Arches,” caring for the environment has never been more recognized and is on the lips of virtually everyone.

Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley is doing their part to reduce, reuse and recycle by offering an alternative to dumping unwanted furniture, appliances and building supplies into area landfills. The Habitat ReStore, opened late last year, sells gently used items that are donated by the community with all proceeds going into Habitat’s building and operating funds.

Habitat will celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd at their ReStore, located between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale on Highway 82 in the Cattle Creek Center. The celebration will be from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm and will feature local “green” products and businesses. A Toyota Prius from Bighorn Toyota will be on hand for attendees to view as well as products and information from Basalt-based Bedding Down, Inc. and Sunsense solar electric company in Carbondale. The Aspen Skiing Company (SkiCo) plans to give away free compact fluorescent light bulbs as long as supplies last. Other local green businesses and products will be on display in addition to Habitat’s entire inventory of good, reusable furniture, appliances and building supplies priced at 40-60% below retail.

According to LeAnna Atkinson, Habitat’s ReStore manager, “By holding the Earth Day Extravaganza, we want to do our part to raise awareness to the issue of the environment and let the community know that we offer an alternative to bringing their unwanted items to the landfill. With the help of our friends at Olde Towne Moving & Storage, we will even come pick up tax-deductible, donated items. It couldn’t be easier to care for the environment and help support affordable housing in the process.”

The entire community is invited to attend Habitat’s Earth Day Extravaganza. Food and beverages will be served all day and there will be entertainment for the whole family, including a bounce house for the kids. Local radio station, KMTS, will be broadcasting live from 11:00 – 1:00.

The ReStore is located in the Cattle Creek Center between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale off of Hwy. 82. The store is on the frontage road behind Little Bear Antiques in Warehouse G.
